The Concerto in E Minor by J.S. Bach is the first in a series of arrangements of Bach's music for flute ensemble, facilitated and arranged by Yuijan Zhu and Jørn Schau.
This edition is based on a reconstruction of BWV 1059 and BWV 35, as well as a solo concerto for flute and strings facilitated by German composer, conductor, and church musician Winfried Radeke. Sources identify 1726 as the year of Bach's composition.
As a solo concerto, Bach's Concerto in E Minor is somewhat atypical compared to the standards of its time. The string parts assume roles that extend beyond traditional accompanying functions, and the solo part is deeply integrated into the string ensemble.
Our arrangement can be performed by a flute quartet but has also been extended and facilitated for flute ensembles featuring C-flutes, alto flutes, and bass flutes. The polyphony and equality of the voices in the original score allow solo passages and accompanying roles to be distributed between the parts. In this arrangement, all voices are equally important in both melodic and harmonic progressions.
The flute ensemble repertoire is continually growing and consists of original compositions as well as transcriptions. Arranged music in which the original has a uniform sound and instrumentation is particularly well suited for flute ensembles. Baroque concertos that include strings are excellent examples in this respect, and the current release falls under this category.

About the composer +
-
Johann Sebastian Bach (31 March 1685 – 28 July 1750) was a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. He enriched established German styles through his skill in counterpoint, harmonic and motivic organisation, and the adaptation of rhythms, forms, and textures from abroad, particularly from Italy and France. Bach's compositions include the Brandenburg Concertos, the Goldberg Variations, the Mass in B minor, two Passions, and over three hundred cantatas of which around two hundred survive. His music is revered for its technical command, artistic beauty, and intellectual depth.
Bach's abilities as an organist were highly respected during his lifetime, although he was not widely recognised as a great composer until a revival of interest and performances of his music in the first half of the 19th century. He is now generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time.
